HOMOSEXUALITY - So natural yet full of stigma. Sexual behavior of all types never ceases to be a topic of great interest. Views of sexual behavior are influenced by many things that changed over the time. During 4rh century B.C. Greeks regarded sex as a pleasurable part of nature, to be enjoyed with partners of either sex. This was the beginning , though this view had a contrast with western europe. From time to time some brave souls tried to question popularly held ideas & one of them is Sigmund Freud. In 19h century, he traced the sexual deviations of adults to significant events in childhood. He argued that all people are innately bysexual, rather than heterosexual as the culture discreed. He suggested that inability to resolve Oedipus Complex results in adult homosexual behavior. Freud's view of homosexuality was simply a variation of sexual development, not a disorder. A person's belief about own sexual orientation doesn't depend on actual behavior. Someone with no sexual experience at all may think of oneself as homosexual.
Depending on how the questions were asked, people had a variety of response on their sexual preferences. When it comes to sex, who decides what constitutes normal? Who decides what is too little or too much? While surveys are valuable & can influence views concerning swxual behavior, defination of sexual normalcy are determined by & grow out of opinions, biases & myths that may change over time. Like heterosexuals, homosexuals may be anxious or depressed & are not always emotionally stable, but homosexuality is clearly not a form of mental illness. Sexual orientation strongly emerges during adolescence. Due to social rejection & stigmatic resistance in some social settings, suicidal rates are much higher in homosexuals. Thus some homosexual individuals may be at higher risk of disorders because of stress factors disproportionately affecting homosexual community. Cultural & religious perspectives & legal aspects of some sexual behavior are all intertwined, resulting difficulties in progress of research.
