Impulse & Crime.

Forensic psychiatry comes into play to judge any sort of destructive or homicidal incident to gain some clear idea about criminal's modus operandi. One more thing being judged whether the offender is mentally unsound or not. To commit any sort of crime, be it pickpocketing, fire setting to homicide or genocide, the most important emotional trait to be checked is IMPULSE.

Impulse is sudden & irresistible desire or force in a person, compelling him/her to the conscious performance of some act for which there was neither a motive nor any forethought & preparation. A sane person having self control & judgement capacity, may not finally give shape ti his/her impulsive or compulsive desire. But an insane person who lacks in self control & judgement capacity, can't resist impulse & commit an offence. Thus, in connection with commission of an unlawful act, impulse is a good defense for an insane person which is not so far for the sane person. That's why forensic psychiatric intervention is needed to determine the psychological sanity of offender. There are different types of impulse to take into consideration.

1. Kleptomania - This means an irresistible desire to steal articles which may be of small value & even may be of no use to the person.

2. Diapomania - An irresistible desire to take alcoholic drinks.

3. Pyromania - An irresistible desire to set fire on things, which may be important & valuable. The person may be temporarily not conscious or careful.

4. Mutilomania - An irresistible desire to injure & mutilate animals, specially domestic pets.

5. Sexual Impulse - The person may feel compulsive urge to perform sexual intercourse, which may often be in a perverted way . There may be some psychic problem in sexual behavior or the person may be a victim of mental subnormality.

6. Suicidal Impulse - There is definite mental problem. Often intoxication like, that with LSD may lead to suicidal impulse.

7. Homicidal Impulse - Here also mental abnormality is mostly responsible. In certain chronic intoxications, as in case of chronic use of cannabis, a person may develop sudden killing spree.
